Abstract

Heritage in Transition explores cultural heritage as a dynamic process, continuously reshaped by social practices, collective memory and participatory interpretation. Through 14 chapters and international case studies, the volume examines how local and transnational communities produce, negotiate and transform the meanings and values of heritage in contexts of change, conflict and reconciliation. From grassroots initiatives to ecomuseums, from archival recovery to underground built heritage, and from peace-building processes in the Western Balkans to the memory of the Spanish Civil War, the book proposes a plural and democratic understanding of heritage, not as a static legacy, but as a living field of meaning, inclusion and collective action.
