Abstract

This Executive Summary is the outcome of the work carried out within the thematic working group “Drought, Water Scarcity and Water Crises” of the Department of Earth System Sciences and Environmental Technologies (DSSTTA) of the National Research Council of Italy. The document builds upon the volume “Drought, scarcity and water crises”, published in Italian in 2024 and stemmed from the collaboration between different Italian institutions: the National Research Council of Italy, the Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research, the Department of Civil Protection, and the Commissioner’s Office for Urgent Interventions Related to Water Scarcity. This Executive Summary aims at providing to the international scientific community and to institutions engaged in water governance an updated technical-scientific contribution, starting from the ‘state-of-the-art’ in Italy and synthesizing relevant findings, monitoring activities, and research gaps in different but interconnected fields characterizing the water cycle, the hydrologic and water balance and the governance of water resources under multiple natural and anthropogenic pressures in Italy. At the same time the volume proposes practical elements through a dedicated “policy recommendation” section to improve resilience in water resources management and to reduce ecological and environmental impacts during drought events.
