Abstract

Delphy 3D: The Guardian of Capo Granitola” represents an integrated research, innovation and development project that combines scientific research, art and dissemination. Its primary objective is to offer a novel perspective on the biology and life history of cetaceans, as well as on the activities of the researchers dedicated to their study. Far from being mere graphic inventions, the illustrations contained herein are the product of a rigorous reworking of the scientific photographs and research texts provided by the scientists, technologists and technicians of the CNR at Capo Granitola. These experts work continuously to convert the occurrence of a stranded cetacean—technically categorized by current legislation as “waste to be disposed of”—into a valuable resource for scientific knowledge, academic training, and biodiversity conservation. This initiative provides a journey through science and narrative, elucidating the specific biological traits, historical legends, and conservation challenges of the cetaceans inhabiting the Strait of Sicily. Historically feared as marine monsters, these animals are now referred to as the “Guardians of the Capo Granitola Lighthouse,” a title originating from their behavior of dispersing schools of fish, thereby inadvertently saving them from fishermen’s purse seine nets. “Delphy 3D” deliversa message of hope and awareness, asserting that scientific knowledge represents the highest form of environmental respect, prompting a deeper understanding and preservation of the Mediterranean Sea—historically designated as “Mare Nostrum”—viewed as a complex document whose pages are yet to be fully analyzed. This comic book was developed within the framework of the Spoke 7 project "Biodiversity and Society: Communication, Education, and Social Impact" under the PNRR National Biodiversity Future Center (NBFC).
