Abstract

The definition of the historical center was claimed between the middle of the XIXth century and the middle of the XXth century in the West, in particular in Eu-rope. In this time was started the industrial progress that had been promoter of the significant debates on the relationship between historic and contemporary city. Very important the international role of the professor Gustavo Giovannoni (1873-1947) that had formulated the definition of the historical center, participating in interna-tional conferences and promoting the dialogue between old and new. In Orient, par-ticularly in Japan, the definition «historical center» was introduced after the middle of the XXth century, in the 70s. The definition was imported by the European culture but, still today, is very difficult to define this concept in Eastern culture. Since the middle of the XXth century in Latin America the application of the definition meets different solutions due to the cultural complexity of different countries. The paper analyses the meanings of «historical center» between Orient and Occident compared to the Cuban experience.
