Abstract

Micro-Pattern Gaseous Detectors are nowadays well-established technologies and the application ranges from high-energy physics experiments (COMPASS, TOTEM, LHCb as few examples) to astrophysics, neutron detection, medical imaging. The interest and the R&D activities have increased in the last years, leading to new structures with new geometries and the development of largerarea detectors, suitable for the instrumentation of a large portion of the next generation SLHC or linear collider experimental apparatus. An international collaboration, RD51, involving over 50 institutes all around the world, was born to allow an easier exchange of information and to optimise the efforts and the resources for the development, the production and the characterisation of such detectors. An overview of the current activities is presented, reporting the latest results in this framework and their applications.
