Abstract

The article describes through a critical analysis the process and results of the project Andata e Ritorno (a/r): dalle parole alla materia. The project aimed to link scholarly modelling as a formal and informal reasoning strategy across disciplinary boundaries and languages, spanning also cultural heritage (ceramic tradition) and technosciences, and bridging across modelling in research. Focus of the contribution is the ‘plurilingualism’ embedded both in the object of modelling, namely the text of Sigismondo Arquer Sardiniae brevis historia description (1550), and in the modelling process. The aim is to unpack the rhetoric of digital and data models, construction and deconstruction of (digital) model and to act at the core of a new cultural literacy. To integrate these theories with a practical dimension, the experiment made use of Digital Humanities as an interdisciplinary and multilingual departure to study modelling as anchored both to computer science and to the Humanities vis à vis the practice of modeling and representation for ceramic.
