Abstract
The Marche region has valuable thermal water resources and many historic venues, but the spa sector faces a state of ongoing weakness, for the failure of the quality of hospitality and weak entrepreneurial and political general setting. The present work, after describing the geographical spread of the thermal destinations in the Marche, reports results of a survey among entrepreneurs and policymakers, in order to highlight the future attractiveness, strengths and weaknesses of the sector and the promotion policy to be undertaken. Findings show it is the entrepreneurial and political impossibility of treating the regional spas as a unique system that precludes the effective and efficient exploitation of the thermal resources. If the earth must lose that great portion of its pleasantness which it owes to things that the unlimited increase of wealth and population would extirpate from it, for the mere purpose of enabling it to support a larger, but not a better or a happier population, I sincerely hope, for the sake of posterity, that they will be content to be stationary, long before necessity compels them to it. […] Si direbbe che gli idraulici abbiano compiuto il loro lavoro e se ne siano andati prima dell'arrivo dei muratori; oppure che i loro impianti, indistruttibili, abbiano resistito a una catastrofe, terremoto o corrosione di termiti.
