Abstract
The paper aims to show the deep impact of Gallo-romance literature on shaping and modeling medieval Italian texts. Some significant examples of this phenomenon can be found in the didactic moral genre between the end of the 13th and the first half of the 14th century. The paper focuses on the vernacular items transmitted by the Northern-Italian manuscript “Saibante-Hamilton 390” and the delta and eta versions of the moral philosophy compendium known as Libro di Costumanza. Particular attention is given to the influence of Old French on both the lexical choices (gallicismi) and the morphosyntactic structures. The study confirms the major role of the langue d’oïl literary production as the most prestigious model for Italian prose works in the Middle Ages.
