Abstract
This contribution focuses on the motion encoding in Classical Latin and in Italian. I present the results of the analysis of Path lexicalization strategies used in Ovid’s Metamorphoses compared to a 14th century Italian vulgarization, written by Arrigo Simintendi da Prato. Since Talmy (2000), it has been described a typological shift from a satellite-framed form of motion encoding (Latin) to a verb-framed form (Italian). However, it is only through a detailed analysis of the morphosyntactic strategies and semantic components involved in motion encoding that it will be possible to classify languages in any meaningful way. In this paper, a motion event annotation grid (modeg) was used, in order to pointing out the change and the continuity lines in Path encoding strategies occurred during the typological shift from Latin to Italian.
