Abstract
The concept of underwater seascape or landscape is still controversial and represents a challenging subject of study. It demands an interdisciplinary approach including physical and anthropic factors, spatialization and characteristics (landscape description), and social and cultural filters (landscape perception). Works span four key areas of thinking that are in constant interaction, i.e. cultural approaches, planning approaches, environment-based approaches and economic and legal approaches. Based on a geophysical approach, examples that illustrate the sea floor physiographic and cultural characteristics in the Bay of Napoli are herein discussed. It is emphasized that cultural and natural resources are not mutually exclusive categories and that a correct approach to the submerged cultural landscapes has to account for the relationships among living and non-living resources, and their environment.
