Abstract

The potential exploitation of information technologies related to the enhancement of the industrial historical archives gives an opportunity to highlight the importance of innovative methods that associate pure semantic meaning to information. The structuring of digital contents combined with the existing technologies amplifies its use over the WEB oriented tools, making it easier to automatically processing and interpreting data, as well as the reading in multicultural and multilingual environments. The goal of the project is the preservation and enhancement of the cultural heritage represented by industrial historical archives by increasing the capacity of archiving, cataloguing and research. The approach identified is to enhance the level of description (semantics) of the data to develop strategies for digital cultural product consuming and marketing for a diverse audience and with different targets. Starting from the resources of the archive of Fondazione Ansaldo, the project aim to identify and implement new ways of accessing resources for the final users, able to highlight interesting functionalities, make available existing relationships in the context of interest among different documents and finally to propose exploration paths tailored on specific user profiles. The project is organized in two main complementary research sub-projects that will focus on two distinct and complementary research themes whose integration is necessary for the achievement of the project. The specific objectives of the two sub-projects are respectively: 1) Definition of innovative methodologies for the storage and preservation of the content to be assessed through multiple formats for heterogeneous target. 2) Definition of tools for the knowledge management and consumption aimed at the protection and enhancement of the historical archives This document provides an overview of the diverse functionalities available for cultural archives exploration via web, as well as the most common information technologies employed to this aim.
