Abstract

Objective: To clarify the controversial concepts of psychological trauma, dissociation and post-traumatic disorders in the light of attachment theory and research. Methods: The article reviews research findings and theoretical reflections on infant disorganized attachment, supporting the hypothesis that this early relational experience fosters a strong tendency to react to later traumatic stressors with dissociation (peri-traumatic dissociation is a pre-requisite for the development of post-traumatic disorders). Results: Attachment disorganization is in itself a dissociative process. The careful study of its characteristic features and of the intersubjective conditions of its development clarifies the concept of dissociation. Every life event that brings to a collapse the controlling strategies that keep attachment disorganization at brake can cause the surfacing of dissociative symptoms and appear, clinically, as a traumatic event. Conclusions: Existing evidence supports the hypothesis that a proper understanding of what constitutes psychological trauma, dissociation, and trauma-related disorders implies the careful consideration of how attachment dynamics intervene in the experiences usually regarded as traumatic.
