Abstract
The final dissertation at the end of triannual degree courses for nurses is a requirement in most Italian universities. Students may be asked to produce a literature review, a case report, a nursing care plan or a research study. The production of a research report is not without difficulties. The students have limited time, very often the planning of the thesis starts only a few months before the closure of the courses; often the thesis is the first approach to a research work. Therefore, in most cases, the quality of the final product is far from being optimal. The analysis of a limited sample of research theses, whose extended summaries are presented in this article, led to the following reflections and suggestions: a. students should be offered the opportunity to become active participats of ongoing projects. With few exceptions, a student cannot be reliably asked to write a research protocol from scratch, collect and analyze data and write a final report in the limited time allowed for the thesis. Each nursing degree course should develop a few lines of research. b. For small scale projects, a strict collaboration with wards or hospitals should be activated in order to collect data on topics relevant for the ward and useful for the organization. A strict methodological support should always be guaranteed. c. The opportunity to present theses based on the work of more students should be explored, in order to rely on relevant samples. And the collaboration of more University courses should be sought, to activate multicentre projects.
