Abstract
In this paper we summarize our experience in the use of CART methodology for the automatic semantic classification of digital images based on low-level features describing some of their pictorial characteristics. The problems addressed are those of sorting photographs, graphics, texts and compound documents, and distinguishing indoor, outdoor and close-up photographs. The experiments were carried out inside a research project aimed to provide semantic information to automatic image enhancement tools
