Abstract

This contribution analyzes the protective measures for sacred mountains and Christian sites in Japan. They can be classified as cultural properties - including historic sites, places of scenic beauty, natural monuments-, as well as natural sites -national parks etc.- cov-ered by the natural environment protection system. A short historical introduction us help to know the reasons of the main topic and to understand the value of the sacred landscape in Japan. Concerning methodological considerations this paper explains be-cause the sacred mountains in Japan – but also in all Asia - cannot be evaluated separate-ly from their religious, artistic or cultural background but it is most appropriate to evalu-ate them in the framework of “associative cultural landscapes”.
