Abstract

A new stratigraphic framework for the Upper Miocene continental strata of the western Pannonian basin is presented in this study, based on unconformity – bounded stratigraphic units derived from seismic stratigraphic interpretation. The data set used for this research work consists of 1700 km of conventional, multi - channel reflection seismic profiles across western Hungary, integrated with some 350 km of high and ultra high - resolution single - channel seismic profiles, specially acquired on Lake Balaton between 1993 and 1997. Seismic stratigraphic analysis has been constrained by selected geolog ical mapping, well logs and borehole data. A magnetostratigraphic record was also available from a corehole in the study area, together with recent ⁴⁰K/⁴⁰Ar dating of basaltic rocks from the Balaton Highland. Five 3rd - order stratigraphic sequences (with 10⁶ year periodicities) have been identified and correlated at regional scale in the post - rift basin fill of Southern Transdanubia. This set of sequences includes most of the Pannonian s. l. succession of western Hungary and approximately correlates with theUpper Serravallian – Messinian strata of the standard marine chronostratigraphy. In contrast to earlier views, no major paleoenvironmental impact can be recognized in the western Pannonian basin during the Messinian salinity crisis of the Mediterranean. How ever, a significant change in the regional stratigraphic patterns may be observed since the earliest Pliocene, possibly associated with the very beginning of a large - scale tectonic inversion within the intra Carpathian area. The case of the Upper Miocene nonmarine strata of the western Pannonian basin is a textbook example of how single categories of stratigraphic units do not meet chronostratigraphic correlation. The use of an integrated stratigraphic approach offers new insights into the complex and long - debated problem of time - stratigraphic correlation between the Upper Neogene deposits of the Pannonian basin and “similar” nonmarine strata of the Central Paratethys realm. This research shows that the so - called “Pontian facies” (sensu Stevanović, 1951) of western Hungary corresponds to an unconformity -bounded unit, which is older than the Pontian (sensu stricto) facies of the stratotype area (Black Sea basin). A final result of the study is that to resolve this major contradiction a new chronostratigraphic subdivision should be used in order to discriminate between such similar – in - facies but different – in - age strata.
