Abstract

The ability of retrieving a specific item between crowd of them is of utmost importance, since the modern technologies allow storing a very large number of information. A significant amount of work has been done in the past decades on text-based do cument retrieval. More recently, content-based retrieval systems have been develop ed for images, audios and videos. Data retrieval is especially crucial for CAD (Computer Aided Design) model data-bases which contain designed shapes: it has been estimated that a large part of the design activity is based on the reuse of previous knowledge to address new design problems. Actually, the large use of 3D CAD and CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) systems in industries has generated a huge numb er of digital 3D CAD models. The reuse of these models and the exploitation of the knowledge asso ciated with them are becoming an important way to facilitate new designs. According to a report of the USA government, 80% of new design requirements can be fulfilled by reusing existing mechanical parts directly or by applying minor modifications on them. Efficient 3D search engines are therefore necessary to avoid re-inventing, or re-designing, the wheel every time and to support the re-use of design models. An important point is that the similarity between two shapes is assessed not only interms of global match. For engineering applications, partial matching is definitely desirable, if an existing ob ject differs only in few details from a new model to be produced, then it is not difficult to adapt the existing ob ject to the new one. To achieve this goal it is essential to have instruments to archive and retrieve the model according to several suitable criteria. To track and control data related to a product, modern CAD systems are integrated with more complex systems, called PDM (Product Data Management). The data tracked usually involve the technical specifications of the product, provisions for its manufacturing and assembling, the types of materials that will be required to pro-duce go o ds,... Unfortunately, these systems efficiently manage search based on textual metadata, while they offer limited capabilities for the search according to some specific geometric characteristic.
